Largest Transmission and Transformation Project in Northern Uganda Fully Operational

Recently, the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) 132kV Lots 2 & 3 substations, the largest transmission and transformation project in Uganda, were fully operational.

The project was jointly constructed by CPECC Central Southern China Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. and its consortium partners.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni unveiled the Nebbi 132kV substation.

Ugandan Vice President Jessica Alupo cut the ribbon for the Arua 132kV Substation.

Museveni expressed his admiration for the project's high-quality construction and acknowledged the capabilities of CEEC.

He emphasized that the completion of the project marks the first-ever connection of the northern region of Uganda to the country's national power grid, ensuring a stable and reliable power supply and putting an end to the long-standing issue of power shortages.

This project marks a significant milestone for CPECC Central Southern China Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. as it is the company's first World Bank-funded project secured through international bidding.

The project entails the construction of four substations in the northern region of Uganda, specifically in Kole, Gulu, Nebbi, and Arua. It is divided into two parts. Lot 2 involves the establishment of a 132/33 kV substation and a 33 kV distribution line in both Kole and Gulu, while Lot 3 covers two similar substations and a distribution line connecting Nebbi and Arua.

Notably, the Kole substation in Lot 2 commenced operations and supplied electricity on September 6, 2023, while the Gulu substation followed suit on November 18, 2023.

The project's completion holds immense significance in augmenting power supply to the northern region of Uganda, effectively alleviating the prevailing electricity scarcity in northern Ugandan cities.

Additionally, it plays a pivotal role in enhancing Uganda's national power supply system, improving local livelihoods, and fostering local economic development.
